Buttermilk & Lassi

Spicy buttermilk is a traditional south Indian drink usually served after taking heavy meal to improve the digestion. Buttermilk with jeera powder or chaat masala is popular in other parts of India. Lassi is a sweetened flavored creamier buttermilk served chilled as dessert in India. Generally buttermilk is kept in earthenware (mud pots) few hours before serving and served in the mid morning and after lunch during summer.

Both buttermilk & lassi are used in Ayurveda to treat many illnesses. Health benefits of taking buttermilk are:

  1. Improves immunity as it is probiotic
  2. Strengthens bones, due to its high calcium & potassium content
  3. Relieves acidity & heart burns
  4. Improves digestion
  5. Prevents dehydration
  6. Contains less lactose, hence suitable for people with lactic intolerance

  4. Good one! Ayurveda counts buttermilk as ‘best medicine’ for IBS ( Irritable Bowel Syndrome ), just that it should be sweet not sour.

Can you use yam or coconut to make lassi too?

    Liked by 2 people

    1. Megala says:

Anything which is sour or sweet can be added, if you add coconut it may become grainy, instead you can try with coconut cream.

Wow Megs just wow! This is not just a kitchen it is a work of art! Frankly I dont much care for food blogs (no offense but I am not a foodie or a great cook) but i can’t help but drop in on your blog and actually want to cook! And I am dying for some lassi now. Hats off and thanks so much for pandering to my request. And any time you are short of ideas, could you share some mock-tail recipes? My son is crazy about them and is terribly disappointed with his most unimaginative mum! If I could pull of just one exotic drink i could probably get him to do anything 😀
