Kofta Curry

Kofta is a soft potato dumpling soaked in delectable curry greatly enjoyed by children. Kofta curry is also relished by people who have not accustomed to the heat of red chilli. In this recipe ginger is used to make the gravy spicy and red chilli powder is added mainly for flavor. You may adjust ginger & red chilli powder according to your palate.

IMG_8977Now the recipe for Kofta curry is as below:


Yields : 11 kofta


  1. Potatoes (medium sized) – 2 Nos.
  2. Corn flour (corn starch) – 1 tbsp
  3. Cashew nuts – 6 Nos. (broken into small pieces)
  4. Raisins – 10 Nos.
  5. Salt – ½ tsp
  6. Any neutral oil for deep frying – 250 ml (I used saffola oil)
  7. Corn flour for dusting


Cooking Method:

  • Steam potatoes for 10 min. and remove its skin.
  • Add cashew nuts, raisins, salt, corn flour & steamed potatoes into a mixing bowl.
  • Knead potato into a lump-free dough.
  • Divide dough into 11 balls of equal size.
  • Coat each ball with corn flour and keep aside.
  • Heat a frying pan with oil in medium flame.
  • When the oil is ready for frying reduce the flame and slowly drop the balls (3 or 4) one after another.
  • Fry them in medium flame until they turn golden.
  • In the same way fry remaining balls & keep them aside.




  1. Oil – 1 tsp
  2. Onion (medium sized) – 3 Nos.
  3. Ginger – a thumb sized piece
  4. Garlic – 3 pods
  5. Red chilli powder – 1 tsp
  6. Turmeric powder – ¼ tsp
  7. Coriander seeds powder – 1 tsp
  8. Garam masala – ½ tsp
  9. Tomatoes (medium sized) – 2 Nos
  10. Salt – ½ tsp
  11. Cashew nuts – 9 Nos.
  12. Chopped coriander leaves for garnishing


Cooking Method:

  • Chop onions, ginger & tomatoes roughly and keep aside.
  • Heat a pan with oil in medium flame.
  • Add onion, ginger & garlic and saute until onion turn translucent.
  • Add red chilli, coriander, turmeric powder & garam masala and saute for 30 sec.
  • Add chopped tomatoes & salt and simmer until tomatoes are well amalgamated.
  • Remove from heat.
  • Grind onion mixture into a paste when it reaches room temperature.
  • Add cashew nuts and grind into a smooth paste after adding a tbsp of water.
  • Heat the same pan in low flame.
  • Add ground masala & water (about 300 ml) into the pan, stir to combine and bring it to a boil.
  • Remove from heat.


  • Place kofta in a bowl, pour gravy over kofta, garnish with coriander leaves and serve with soft roti, chappati or rice.

  • You may add a tbsp of fresh cream to make it rich & creamy.
  • Although sweetness of cashew balances this pungently spiced gravy, you may add half a tsp of sugar if needed.
